Google’s Circle to Search Gets Live Translation with ‘Scroll & Translate’ FeatureGoogle’s Circle to Search Gets Live Translation with ‘Scroll & Translate’ Feature

Google is enhancing Circle to Search with a powerful new tool Scroll and Translate (also called Live Translate). This feature delivers real-time, on-screen translations while you scroll, making it easier than ever to understand content in other languages. Currently, it’s being rolled out to select Google app beta users on Pixel devices, signaling an early testing phase.

1. What Is It?

Circle to Search traditionally lets users circle, highlight, or tap text and images on the screen for quick searches or translations. The new Scroll and Translate upgrade goes further, enabling translation of entire screens including scrolling webpages, social media feeds, GIFs, and even videos in real-time.

2. How Do You Access It?

– Start by activating Circle to Search (usually via a long-press on the Home button or navigation handle).
– Select the Translate icon, then choose Scroll and Translate.
– Translation begins automatically for the whole screen. Currently, cropping or partial translation isn’t available.

3. What It Does

– Provides live translation of full screens, including dynamic or moving content.
– Uses overlays to display translated text, though these may feel slightly abrupt or distracting.
– Takes a few seconds to process before displaying results.

4. Behind the Name—Live Translate or Scroll and Translate?

Google hasn’t finalized the name yet. Some builds label it Live Translate, while others show Scroll and Translate. Since “Live Translate” already exists on Pixel devices, a distinct name could help avoid confusion.

5. Why It Matters

– Eliminates the need to copy-paste or switch to Google Translate.
– Helps users seamlessly understand foreign language content within the same browsing flow.
– Handles longer paragraphs and colloquial language more effectively.

6. What’s Next?

– Broader rollout expected in future updates.
– Possible improvements may include smoother overlays, faster processing, cropping-based translations, and wider device support beyond Pixels.
