Gemini’s “Personal Context” and Privacy EnhancementsGemini’s “Personal Context” and Privacy Enhancements

1. Personalized Memory—On By Default

Google’s latest Gemini update introduces a feature called Personal Context, which allows the app to draw upon your past conversations to deliver more personalized and relevant responses. Once enabled, Gemini remembers your preferences such as favorite books, hobbies, or ongoing projects and references that information without requiring you to reintroduce it. As Google explains, the aim is for Gemini to act as “a partner who’s already up to speed” .

This feature is enabled by default for users of the Gemini 2.5 Promodel in select countries. Google plans to extend it to the 2.5 Flash model and more regions in coming weeks.

Settings → Personal context → Your past chats with Gemini in both mobile and web

Examples of Personalized Use-Cases:

Suggestions for a party theme based on your favorite comic characters.

Tailored book recommendations informed by past summaries you requested.

YouTube channel ideas inspired by earlier chat topics

2. Temporary Chats for Privacy-Controlled Conversations

Not every chat needs to be stored. With the new  Temporary Chats, you can initiate one-off conversations that:

Don’t appear in your conversation history.

Aren’t used  for training Gemini’s personalization.

Expire in 72 hours, unless you save or export them

To start one, tap the chat-bubble icon in the new chat menu. This is useful for sensitive queries you don’t want influencing future suggestions.

3. Renaming & Refining Data Controls

Google is enhancing transparency with updated privacy settings:

Gemini Apps Activity is being renamed Keep Activity in the coming weeks.

If enabled, a sample of photos, files, and uploads may be used to improve Google services (effective Sept 2, 2025)

You can disable this anytime, or use Temporary Chats to bypass data use entirely.

Additionally, a recent update allows users to choose whether audio, screenshots, and video shared via Live chat may be used for AI training; it’s off by default

Why These Updates Matter

Enhanced convenience: Gemini becomes smarter over time, saving you from repeating preferences or past chats

Balance personalization with control: Temporary Chats and toggles let you decide when Gemini should forget.

Privacy transparency: Clearer naming and options (e.g., Keep Activity, Temporary Chats) support user control over their data.

Google aims to position Gemini as a proactive AI assistant that learns from past interactions mirroring features from competitors like ChatGPT while safeguarding user privacy through temporary chats and customizable data settings . Ultimately, whether Gemini will adapt to you or keep things ephemeral is entirely in your hands.
